One dead after trooper involved shooting

SUMTER CO., SC (WTOC) - The South Carolina Department of Public Safety has had a trooper involved-shooting in Sumter County in which the suspect in the incident has died.

The incident occurred on July 14 about 6:30 p.m. when a trooper stopped a vehicle for speeding at Beckwood Road and U.S. 521.

Based on evidence during the stop, the trooper administered field sobriety tests. When the trooper attempted to place the subject under arrest for driving under the influence, the subject resisted arrest and a struggle ensued. The trooper attempted to retreat and use his department-issued Taser. The trooper was still unable to subdue the suspect and discharged his firearm in fear of his life.

The trooper, TFC B.O. Stokes, Post A, Sumter County, will be on administrative duties during the investigation. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
