Savannah Public Safety Study Task Force Meets

The newly established Savannah Public Safety Study Task Force held its first meeting last night. Mayor Otis Johnson recruited 40 people to serve on the task force. It is a cross-section of the Savannah community made up of business owners and educators, law enforcement officers, victims of crime and even former criminals.

Last night, Mayor Johnson showed statistics identifying the victims of homicides and the people arrested for those crimes. "We need someone to stand up and say we've got a problem," he said. "And this problem is mostly in the black community. Because we are both the victims and the perpetrators of these homicides, and we've got to do something about it."

Other statistics showed most of Savannah's violent crimes happened in the downtown area while most of the property crimes were committed on the city's south side.

The group will meet every two weeks to target problems and find solutions.
