RINCON, GA (WTOC) -
A child was injured late Tuesday morning in a dog mauling.
Wesley Frye, 5, was playing with another child at a home on Hampton Court in the Paddleford Subdivision when the dog attacked his face and other parts of his body, according to the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.
An adult was inside the home at the time of the attack and she was eventually able to remove the dog and secure it outside. The witness said the children were playing inside the living room prior to the attack. It is unknown at this time what sparked the attack, according to the sheriff's office.
Lifestar transported the child to Memorial University Medical Center due to the severity of his injuries.
David Ehsanipoor, the public information officer with the sheriff's office, said the case is still under investigation, and the dog, which is a pit bull, is currently being quarantined for 10 days for evaluation at the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.
"We are currently in the process of looking to see if the dogs vaccinations were up to date. The owner of the dog is cooperating with investigators and turned the dog over," he said. "The pitbull is in our custody
and we will go through the process. Our Humane Division is investigating and we
are not sure of any charges right now. We are just trying to interview people
and find out what led up to all of this."
The case remains under investigation by the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.
Ehsanipoor said the child remains in critical condition.
