BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -
The Navy is looking for public
comment over the possibly of expanding a Georgia bombing range owned by the Marine
Corps Air Station Beaufort.
The Island Packet reports that last
month the Navy released an environmental report examining plans to expand the Townsend
Bombing Range in McIntosh County, which is operated by the Georgia Air National
Guard.
The report recommends adding 28,000
acres to the 5,000-acre range. The report said buying the land would cause a $35,000
loss in property tax revenue in McIntosh County and $131,000 a year in Long County.
Public comments are open until Aug.
27. Meetings will be held Aug. 7 and Aug. 9 in Ludowici and Darien.
A final decision will be made next
summer. Read the full story in the Island Packet.
