SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

While out and about shopping and running errands, there's steps shoppers can take to prevent becoming a victim of a purse snatcher.

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police say the majority of purse snatchers seek out and prey on their victims well before they make the grab.

Police are still searching for a suspect from an incident last month that occurred at the Target on Abercorn Street. Police say a man watched the woman go up and down the store aisles, followed her outside then pushed her and took her purse.

Although no one is 100 percent safe from a crime like this, police say the best way to prevent it is to be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you absolutely must shop alone at night, ask a store escort to walk you out. Also, try not to carry too many extra cards or cash in your wallet.

"Keep an eye on what's going on around you. If you happen to have a purse with you remember you don't want to ever leave your purse unattended, that's the first sign you're able to be victimized," Officer Samantha Stephens said.

Police also suggest carrying a flashlight with you at night so you're able to see in poorly lit areas.
