Savannah's summer lunch program is underway. Yesterday, workers served more than 4,800 lunches and today's tally is expected to be even higher. The program has been around for more than 30 years, bringing free lunches to thousands of children at more than 100 sites throughout Chatham County.
This year in addition to the free meals, kids can participate in games and other activities for prizes.
"It's important that we reach out to these kids because some of them don't get a meal during the day," said site manager Rebecca Milton.
"It helps the kids do something better than being out on the streets," added Savannah resident Tranice Ross.
The summer lunch program will continue through the end of July. Anyone 18 or younger is welcome. For lunch locations and times, visit the program online, or call 351.3842.
