SPRINGFIELD, GA (WTOC) -

Three young men from Springfield and a teen were arrested and charged in connection with an overnight armed robbery and shooting in Effingham County.

Effingham County sheriff's deputies responded at about 11 p.m. Wednesday to a home in the 300 block of Mockingbird Drive near Springfield on a report of an armed robbery and shots fired.

A Pizza Hut deliveryman was called to the home to deliver three pizzas. When the deliveryman arrived, he was ambushed by four black males one of who was carrying a semi-automatic handgun, according to the sheriff's office.

A suspect shot at the deliveryman. Those shots hit the pizza boxes.

The deliveryman suffered injuries from the shrapnel in the shooting. He was able to drive away from the suspects, according to ECSO.

Karen Engel, the owner of Papa's Pizza to Go, which is located right across from the Pizza Hut in Springfield, says she doesn't have any delivery drivers employed right now and after Wednesday night's shooting, she is glad she doesn't.

"I don't want anyone to get hurt. We were always concerned when we had to send somebody out because of that area. They're out by themselves and they're carrying cash. You don't want them to get hurt."

Toni Brisendine has lived int he Forest Hills neighborhood for eight years. She says crime in the area has increased within the past year.

"There was, at one time, some articles stored over at an abandoned house that had been stolen from the neighborhood. It happened about six to eight months ago."

Investigators developed details within hours that led deputies to the four suspects and two stolen firearms.

Peter Johnson lll, 18, Joshua Buckner, 19, and Curdray Wimberly, 20, all of Springfield, are charged with armed robbery.

A 15-year-old is charged with aggravated assault, armed robbery and possession of stolen property. The teen is believed to have been the trigger man, according to the sheriff's office.

The three adults are being held at the Effingham County Jail. The teen is being held in the Chatham Youth Detention Center.
