Brief Police-Protester Standoff

Police pulled out their riot gear, but fortunately things ended peacefully. Police pulled out their riot gear, but fortunately things ended peacefully.

Boredom sparked a showdown between G-8 protestors and police which ended quickly and peacefully this afternoon. Around 2pm, about 25 protestors made an unscheduled march in downtown Savannah. The demonstration caused police to shut down access to streets and put on their riot gear.

After a brief confrontation, the protesters made their way back to Forsyth Park.

Savannah-Chatham police major Dan Reynolds says their top priority was to protect nearby residents and businesses. "If you don't take action, you're blamed for not taking action," Maj. Reynolds said. "If you don't plan, such as 9/11--and after 9/11, everybody's going to overreact, everybody's going to be prepared for the worst. And fortunately nothing happened."

Protestors say the march was spontaneous. The sound system in the park wouldn't work, so they took a walk.
