Statesboro Police: Nightclub shooting not first issue

STATESBORO, GA (WTOC) -

As Statesboro police investigate a shooting that killed one woman and sent another to the hospital, they say the club where it happened should be more responsible when it comes to parking lot safety.

Public Safety Director Wendell Turner said police have had several reports of problems from the Platinum Lounge since the club opened roughly 2 years ago.

"We've had local noise complaints. We've had stolen vehicles. People in the community have complained about the trash, property damage associated with people parking in the lot leaving the parking areas. We've had complaints of underage drinking," Turner described.

The shooting occurred Sunday morning around 2:30 a.m., just after the Platinum Lounge on Proctor Street closed. The owner and police agree the crowd was lingering in the parking lot when someone opened fire. The gunfire killed Akeila Roschelle Martin, 32, of Statesboro and wounded Sadondra Brianna Scarboro, 22, of Sylvania.

"No matter what kind of business they have, they have a responsibility to keep their customers safe inside and outside the business," stated Wendell Turner, Statesboro's public safety director.

Turner said police have yet to determine if the women were linked and if one or both was the target of a shooter or if they were hit randomly.

The owner of the club, Hayward Arthur Fields, said he is cooperating with police in the case. He also said at least part of the crowd outside the club during the night never enters the business.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call Detective Keith Holloway at 912.764.9911. A $2,500 reward has been established for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
