Two Suspicious Packages in Downtown Savannah

The G-8 may be over, but security remains on high alert after a few suspicious package scares in downtown Savannah last night. Just after midnight, someone reported a beeping sound coming from the dumpster behind the Hampton Inn at Drayton and Bay Streets. The GBI was called in to assess the situation, along with the Savannah-Chatham bomb squad.

They blocked off all the streets around the Hampton Inn and the robot was sent out to make sure everything was clear. The streets were reopened around 2am this morning.

It was the same scene a few hours earlier when someone found a suspicious suitcase on the corner of Hall and Drayton Streets right across from Forsyth Park. Again the bomb squad and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation sent out the robot to examine the situation. Drayton Street from Hall to Gwinnett was blocked off for a few hours as they blew up the package. It turned out to be a false alarm.
