Water Park to Open in Statesboro

Looking for some good, clean family fun this summer? The answer may be in Statesboro. The Statesboro Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department opens its new water park this weekend, and the community paid for it one cent at a time.

Jessica Ussury felt like one of the luckiest--and wettest--kids in town. "I thought it was great," she told us. "It's going be fun."

She and other day campers got a sneak peek at Splash in the Boro. They don't know what SPLOST is, but they like the splash it makes.

The recreation department formally opens the gates of Splash in the Boro tomorrow morning. They used one-percent sales tax money to pay the $5 million construction cost. With a thousand customers a day expected through the summer, it could quickly pay its own bills and save enough for expansion.

"We realize that there's nothing like this in the area that people can enjoy," said Chad Avret of the recreation. "People from Savannah and surrounding counties can come and enjoy this as well."

The hope is those who drive 30 minutes to an hour to swim here will also eat here and shop here and that will make a sales tax splash of its own.

It's also the first public park in Georgia to add slides and a lazy river to the traditional ball fields and playgrounds for youngsters and those not so young.

The gates open up at 9:45 tomorrow morning. For hours and prices and more information, visit www.splashintheboro.com.
