BAXLEY, GA (WTOC) -

Baxley police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman on Friday morning.

Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey said that James Vann shot and killed a woman with whom he had a young child.

The woman had picked up the child from Vann on Friday morning. Police said that at about 11 a.m. Friday, Vann followed her to her mother's house on Bay Street, killed her and got away.

Just before 1 p.m., Baxley police, Appling County Sheriff's Office, GBI and others tracked Vann to a friend's house in Surrency and arrested him. He had been wounded earlier by someone other than police, so he's hospitalized before he goes to jail.

Vann faces murder and aggravated assault charges. Police are withholding the woman's name until all the family is notified.
