A Chatham County park is getting a facelift thanks to residents' pennies. The Runaway Point park located off President Street was a much-needed addition to the community in the 1990s and was started with the special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST). Now, thanks to new SPLOST funds, a concession stand, baseball fields, dugouts and more are being built.
The woman who spearheaded this entire plan says she never expected it to grow this big. "I hope the day when it is all finished we come out here and really celebrate," Retha Mae McCoy told us. "I never expected this, so it will be just a knock-down drag-out."
Construction on the park will begin in the next few weeks, and is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
