McIntosh County sheriff's deputies, Darien police and U.S. Marshals offered a rude awakening to nearly two dozen people accused of selling drugs.
As part of Operation Red Star, local officers have been building cases against suspects for nine months.
"We've got a diverse problem here in McIntosh County, pills, crack, meth, marijuana, and powdered cocaine is here, just as it is in every community." explained Sheriff Steve Jessup.
Jessup said the prescription pill market may be the toughest to fight because so many people can access medicines through doctors who will write questionable prescriptions.
Officers started knocking on doors of suspects around 3 a.m. Friday and continued throughout the day. By noon, they'd arrested 22 people. Some of those faced multiple charges of selling to undercover officers or informants. Jessup said some of those arrested were repeat offenders, while others faced their first charges.
The sheriff's office conducted a similar sweep in December.
