SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The American Red Cross wants your help, they are in dire need of blood and platelet donations.
The Red Cross says summer is a typically slow time for them, but this year is so bad the supply is at the lowest it's been in 15 years. They're hoping more people will step up.
"About half of the blood we collect comes from people that donate once a year," said American Red Cross District Manager Dean Smith.
"And lord love them, if we didn't have them coming in, we wouldn't have the blood on the shelves. But if only half, of the people who gave once, give twice, we'd never have a blood shortage."
Emily Barker said, "What happens one day if i need that? What if that's what's going to save my life one day?"
Barker is very familiar with the need for donors. She depends on them for her blood and platelet transfusions twice a week.
