State takes pawn shop after owners fail to pay rent

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Big Money Pawn's customers are being turned away by the Palmetto State's consumer affairs investigators. The state took over the pawn shop after the owners failed to pay their landlord over $20,000 in rent.

While customers may not buy any merchandise, folks who left an item for pawn at the store may go back on designated days to reclaim it without paying any interest on the loan from the shop. They will be able to do so on Oct. 17, Nov. 20 and Dec. 3.

"The actual pawn broker has been evicted so the Department of Consumer Affairs is actually facilitating the active pawns that were here. We are giving them up to three months," said Ken Middlebrooks, chief investigator for the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs.

Middlebrooks says the state has taken over one other pawn shop in the last four years.

The money recovered from the pawned items will go directly to the landlord of the building.
