Officials sign proclamation opposing sequestration

HINESVILLE, GA (WTOC) -

Liberty County officials are doing their part to prevent deep financial cuts to the armed forces.

The Liberty Co. Chamber of Commerce and other elected officials held a sequestration proclamation signing Tuesday at the Courthouse Annex in Hinesville to raise awareness of the negative impact of sequestration.

Defense and entitlement cuts of $1.2 trillion would take effect on Jan. 2, 2013 if a deficit cutting package by Congress isn't developed.

Nearly 7,000 jobs would be lost in Hinesville and Ft. Stewart, along with additional budget cuts for the next 10 years.

"We can't afford this. I think Congress will act and I hope soon before the layoff notices go out and people are negatively impacted in our community," said Hinesville Mayor Jim Thomas.

The cuts would take the armed forces to numbers that have not been seen since 1940.
