Shuman Elementary School alert system warns parents

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Confused, concerned, and nervous faces could be found all around Savannah High School Wednesday morning as Shuman Elementary parents and students tried to figure out what was going on.

"I was like, oh my god, what we got to do? They came on the news again and said it was a standoff situation and they were sending all their kids to Savannah High School," says Shawndenine Brown, parent of Shuman Elementary student.

The district says they let parents know about the situation through a recorded message over the phone.

WTOC spoke with several parents who say they did get the alert and felt well-informed.

"I got a voice recorded message from Shuman's principle saying that there was a situation near the school and students were being redirected to Savannah High," says Kimberly Butler, parent of two Shuman Elementary students.

Officials with the Savannah-Chatham County School System say the voice message went out early. They also emphasized how important it is for parents to make sure that their contact information is up to date in the school system so that they actually receive the alerts.

If you did not receive the alert, you can call Shuman Elementary School at 912.395.4500. Officials do encourage parents to actually go to the school to update this information.
