Officials hold groundbreaking for Spanish Moss Trail
BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -
Some exciting changes are coming to the Lowcountry.
On Thursday, folks gathered in Beaufort to officially break ground on the new Spanish Moss Trail. The trail will be a 13.6 mile scenic route along the old Port Royal Railroad and will be used for biking, walking and even fishing.
Officials say this was made possible through a public-private partnership involving Beaufort County, the city of Beaufort, the town of Port Royal and several private groups. They expect it to attract touristsand be an asset to residents.
"I really think this is a tremendous asset for the people of the lowcountry and I think today is a day to celebrate," said Beaufort County Council Chairman Weston Newton.
"I think this will be an ammenity that one would equate with Henry C. Chambers Park in terms of recreation and tourism. Very healthy contributions to the community."
The first mile of the trail will go from Depot Rd. to Allison Rd. in Beaufort and will later extend throughout Port Royal and Beaufort Co.
