COBBTOWN, GA (WTOC) -
A Tattnall County grocery store and restaurant is destroyed by an overnight fire.
The fire broke out shortly before midnight Thursday at Westside Foods on Highway 121 in Cobbtown, which is a small community in north Tattnall County. Fire crews say that when they first arrived, flames were already coming through the roof. The business burned to the ground and is a complete loss.
Crews are still cleaning up debris and keeping an eye on hotspots that may be smoldering and get them put out.
Fire crews from Cobbtown,
Metter and other departments could not save it, but they contained it from spreading
to businesses on either side. Westside Foods has been one of those places that folks will drive from
one end of Tattnall County to the other just to come to the restaurant
to eat lunch.
"That building
was built in the late 1940s or early 1950s. I remember it being built that long
ago and it was built to be a store back then," said Hugh Williamson, a
neighboring business owner.
The
Westside owners are waiting to meet with insurance agents before they plan
their next move. Fire crews said that despite a close call when the roof
collapsed - no one was hurt.
Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.
