Springfield man in custody after high-speed chase

EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

A man is in custody after he led Effingham County deputies on a high-speed chase during which the suspect threw a gun and marijuana out of his car.

Authorities say shortly after 1 a.m. Saturday, Brandon Hawkins, 18, of Springfield, led deputies on a high-speed chase that began on Ga. 21 at Log Landing Road. Deputies were able to box Hawkins in near the Shadowbrook Subdivision in Springfield.  

During the chase, Hawkins threw a handgun out of the car and a large amount of marijuana. Deputies recovered the firearm and the marijuana as well as a ski mask which was located inside of Hawkins' vehicle. 

Hawkins has been charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing and eluding, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and several other traffic violation charges. 

Hawkins was taken to the Effingham County Jail. 

This case remains under investigation.
