Protecting Your Home from Power Surges

Recently storms with heavy rain and strong lightning strikes have hit our area almost daily. That lightning is causing some problems in the form of power surges that could destroy everything from your television to your microwave.

There are a lot of surge protectors to choose from, and choosing the right one really depends on what it is you want to protect and how much money you're willing to spend.

"A surge is something where lightning strikes your house and it's a large problem, things catch on fire, trees go down and everything like that, but there are always spikes and dips in power," said Ben Schumm of Best Buy, which sells surge protectors.

If you're shopping for the best in surge protection, there's a few things you want to keep in mind. Surge protection strips only protect those items that are plugged into it. One "plug it in yourself" model can give you the best surge protection, with a guarantee to replace any equipment lost. But it costs $500.

There are cheaper options, like Premium Surge Protection from Savannah Electric. "As long as you have Premium Surge Protection installed outside of your home at your meter, we protect all of your appliances," said the company's Jennifer Wilcox. "All of your electronics, including all those big and fabulous DVD players and television, everything in your homes."

At $9.99 a month plus a one-time installation fee of $24.99, it'll save you the expense of having to replace your home electronics in the event of a power surge.
