SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Oct. 3 is International Walk to School Day. Schools are participating in the one-day event to celebrate the many benefits of walking and bicycling to school throughout the month of October.

In 2011, International Walk to School Day was celebrated at more than 4,000 events at schools across the United States, along with children and adults in 40 countries around the world.

This year the Chatham Area Transit and May Howard Elementary in Savannah will join schools from around the world to celebrate. Up to 820 students from May Howard Elementary will be walking and rolling to school Wednesday along with parents, teachers and community leaders. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from Wilmington Island United Methodist Church, Live Oak Library Islands Branch, and Sea Island Drive Community. Walkers and bicyclists will arrive at the school at 8 a.m.

This is the 15th year of Walk to School Day. Chatham County has 6 schools registered for the event but many are participating. Safe Kids Savannah sponsors the regional event. Participating schools received incentives and educational materials to give students and parents from Ga. safe routes to school.
