SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Has your refrigerator seen better days? Ready for a new dishwasher? Now might be the best time for your to make that big ticket purchase for your home. Georgians can save money on several appliances this weekend thanks to a sales-tax holiday.
From Oct. 5 through Oct. 7, you can purchase home appliances tax-free anywhere in the state of Georgia. Those items include all appliances with the energy stat label, which could be anything from dishwashers to ceiling fans. The only exception is the price tag must be $1,500 or less.
Although ENERGY STAR appliances are usually more expensive than standard ones, experts say you'll save plenty of money in the long run by making the switch now.
"Refrigerators of 20 years ago can cost you upwards of $150 more a year to operate.
Energy efficient washing machines today will typically use 20-30 gallons less per cycle. For a family of four, that can save upwards of 10,000 to 12,000 gallons of water a year per family," says Todd Livingood, of Livingood appliances.
The appliances included in the sales-tax holiday:
- Dishwashers, clothes washers, air conditioners, ceiling fans, fluorescent light bulbs, dehumidifiers, programmable thermostats, refrigerators, doors and windows that have the ENERGY STAR label and a purchase price of $1,500 or less.
- Bathroom sink faucets, high-efficiency toilets and urinals, showerheads, faucet accessories (such as aerators), and weather- or sensor-based irrigation controllers that have the WaterSense label and a purchase price of $1,500 or less.
