ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A woman is recovering from three gunshot wounds police said she received while breaking into a southwest Atlanta apartment.

It happened early Thursday morning at an apartment complex on Continental Colony Parkway.

Atlanta Police Capt. Adam Lee III said Katrina Smith, 35, went to the apartments to see a man. Instead of knocking on the door, he said Smith kicked in the door.

Jarmal Davis was inside and shot Smith in the chest, breast, and shoulder.

Smith somehow then managed to drive herself to her mom's house in East Point, where she called 911.

"We've seen situations before where people are in shock after being shot, and they're able to do things we normally wouldn't think they could do," explained Lee.

Smith was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where she was listed in stable condition Thursday morning.

Smith said she faces charges of criminal damage to property and burglary.

Davis will not be charged in the shooting, but does face a marijuana possession charge.

Lee said a motive remains under investigation.
