Alcohol referendum left off some Smith County ballots

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

Smith County sent out incorrect ballots to at least two precincts for the upcoming election on November 6.

Smith County officials say it's been reported that some ballots were missing the local alcohol sales petition issue.

Voters in Precincts 39 and 31 who received ballots by mail this week will be issued a correct ballot some time next week. Officials say the corrected ballot will be clearly identified by a pink sticker.

Only voters who requested and received a ballot by mail, who live within Tyler city limits and reside in Precincts 39 or 31, would've received the incorrect ballot.

Robert Payne says his mother-in-law, Linda Powell, received her ballot Friday afternoon. Payne says he noticed the beer/wine petition wasn't on the ballot. He says he called the Smith County election office and they said, "Whoops. We'll be sending her a new ballot."

He says his mother-in-law lives within the Tyler City Limits and votes in precinct 31.

The Smith County Elections Office asks that you discard incorrect ballots once you've received your corrected version.

A Buy Local First spokesperson released the following statement to KLTV Friday afternoon:

We have worked hard to put this issue before the voters and are disappointed to hear that some voters received ballots without the local option issue on them. We are confident Smith County will do everything in its power to correct this situation.

If you have any further questions, you can contact the Smith County Election's Office for more information (903) 590-4777.
