Hazlehurst man charged with setting church on fire

HAZLEHURST, GA (WTOC) -

The Georgia State Fire and Insurance Commissioner's office says one man sits in jail, charged with setting a Jeff Davis County church on fire.

Spokesman Glenn Allen says the St. Matthews AME Church on St. Matthews Church Road is a total loss.

Allen says 46 year old Larry Kurtz was arrested in connection with the blaze.

He says surveillance video shows Kurtz breaking into the church's food bank then setting the building on fire.

He's being charged with two counts of burglary and one count of first degree arson. He currently sits in the Jeff Davis County jail.
