Fire destroys garage on Wilmington Island

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

An overnight fire on Wilmington Island completely destroyed a garage Saturday night.

Joseph Byrd alerted 911 of the fire. The owner of the house was also alerted; however he is out of the country.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage, completely destroying it, while there is only smoke damage in the main house.

There is no word yet on how the fire started.

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that metro Savannah's unemployment rate declined to 7.1 percent in April, down three-tenths of a percentage point from 7.4 percent in March.
