Around 11:40pm last night, a woman was driving a car on Interstate 516 eastbound when she lost control of the vehicle as it passed under the Veteran's Parkway overpass. The car slammed into the guardrail with such force that the guardrail bent in half and punched a hole through the driver's side of the car.
When firefighters, police and ambulance crews arrived, the woman and a male passenger had already crawled out of the wreckage. They refused treatment, but a few minutes later an ambulance was called back when the woman began complaining of pains.
She and the passenger were taken to Memorial Health for treatment. Their names and conditions have not yet been released, and Savannah-Chatham police are still investigating.
