A large crowd of constituents from a number of Republican and Tea Party clubs in the lowcountry greeted Senator Jim DeMint at the Royal Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island Monday morning.

During the event, the Republican senator shared his concerns about the country's direction and his hopes for the upcoming presidential election. He says there's a lot at stake in this election.

"If you look at our debt and level of spending, we're moving in the wrong direction. We're hopeful we can get a chance in the administration and in the Senate, and try to move our country back towards those things that make America work," said DeMint.

DeMint says he is optimistic Romney will win the election and says events like this one are encouraging.

During his talk, the senator also discussed a number of important issues facing our nation including sequestration. He says although there is a lot of concern for the military, if sequestration goes through, rushing into a decision isn't the answer.

"We needed to fix it before. If we wait until December and try to make some kind of a bad decision, it's not going to change things," said DeMint. "My goal is if we win the election is not to try to fix something in the lame duck but wait until we swear in Romney and the new Congress and fix it the right way. We've got to cut spending in other areas in order to support our military but we don't need to do it by raising taxes and taking more money from the private economy."

After talking to the crowd, he responded to a number of questions.
