SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Police are investigating a shooting at 39th and East Broad streets that occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

A person suffered serious injuries. Witnesses said there was a brawl outside a convenience store and then they heard gunshots.

Port Wentworth Police Chief Matt Libby told WTOC that gunman took off and wrecked his car in Port Wentworth.

"We're not going to tolerate that behavior. One, you're not going to go into another jurisdiction and commit a felony and try and harm or kill somebody and come out here and think we're not going to come after you," Libby told WTOC.

Officers said they knew he was from Port Wentworth and they set up at Ga. Highway 21. He said the suspect started speeding away, was weaving in and out of traffic and endangered the lives of citizens.

Port Wentworth performed a PIT Maneuver. The suspect's car overturned. Police said driver was Darvis Morris. Morris' mother told WTOC that her son is innocent.

"I think this was a misunderstanding. He is good friends with the victim," she said.

Morris suffered minor injuries. Police said a gun was found in his vehicle. He is at Memorial University Medical Center.
