TYBEE ISLAND, GA (WTOC) -
Speculation, rumors and mysterious fliers have caused some commotion on Tybee Island with allegations of major changes coming to Tybee's city government.
It all started after a replacement councilman was named for the late Frank Shuman in late September. At the time, Mayor Jason Buelterman welcomed the new council member.
"I'm confident that we have a good person, Jan Fox, who's been with us. She served on our audit committee for a long time, and actually used to actually work for the city. So, I'm very happy she put her hat in the ring just like a number of other very good people," Mayor Buelterman told WTOC in September.
Just a few weeks later, a flier began circulating on Tybee titled "HIJACKED." It starting making the rounds via email, Facebook and in driveways on the island. The flier alleges some council members are trying to fire city manager Diane Schleischer as well as the zoning manager and the clerk of council. It also details reasons why, some might say, from the view of a person with inside knowledge.
The anonymous flier author accused council of being a "sham" involved in a "grudge match" with city government.
A second flier, titled "GRUDGE," has also been circulated.
Schleischer was not available for comment, but Mayor Buelterman told WTOC Wednesday afternoon he stood behind the job the city manager is doing, he completely supports her said she is doing a good job and will continue doing a good job.
"Like any other anonymous communication, whether via Facebook or comment sections of newspaper articles or hard copies of letters, I don't believe such things are constructive," Mayor Buelterman said.
The Mayor re-emphasized his belief Fox will do a fine job in fulfilling the remainder of the term of Shuman.
As for the flier, he said he does not put much stock in it and was not impressed.
