Three new fire stations to open in Pooler

Several new fire stations are being built in Pooler to protect residents. Construction for the new building on Pine Meadow Dr., just off Pine Barren Rd., is almost complete. It will be a new station for the Pooler Fire Department. Crews are also working on building another on Quacco Rd., near Pooler Pkwy.

"Oh, it is very exciting. When we started here, we had 16 positions. When we add these new positions, we will be at 39. So, we will have doubled the size of the department in just over four years," said Chief Wade Simmons, Pooler Fire Department.

With so many residents and so few firefighters, insurance rates have increased.

"On a scale of one to 10, with one being the very best and 10 being no fire protection at all, we went from a four to a six because we had grown so much and hadn't kept up with the growth," said Simmons.

But with the three new fire stations on the horizon, Pooler homeowners will get a little break on their insurance bill and a little piece of mind.

The first two new stations should be complete by the end of the year. Crews will begin construction on the third station, which will be located on Jimmy Deloach Pkwy, early next year. The stations cost about $1.7 million but the city did save a lot of money since others donated much of the land. Pooler doesn't expect to raise taxes to pay for the rest.
