A mother is saying her son died for no reason. He was killed running from police in Wayne County.
Wayne County Sgt. Josh Kruger was injured after a crash and Dustin Sims, 34, the suspect in the chase, was killed.
WTOC spoke with Sims' mother, who was very emotional and questioned the Wayne County deputies for chasing her son, which ended up with the crash killing him. Most of all, she blames her son's girlfriend, who reported her car stolen over the weekend, which lead to the Monday chase.
"He's not armed and dangerous. He never had weapons. If she hadn't lied and said she didn't give the keys to him and then got scared when he didn't come right back and tell her grandmother, there wouldn't have been a high speed chase," Sherri Sims, mother of victim, told WTOC.
Sherri Sims says her son was an avid racer and she believes he did nothing wrong. The Georgia State Patrol is looking into what happened in Wayne County. Sgt. Kruger was helping Jesup police Monday night in trying catch Dustin Sims when he crashed into Sims' car. While Wayne County Sheriff John Carter has defended his officer, Sherri Sims says her son was the victim.
"They rammed him head on, in the side," Sherri Sims told WTOC.
"He did everything he should have. It's unfortunate it happened like it did but he did nothing wrong," Carter said of his officer.
Sherri Sims said she wants to file a complaint with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
