Zachaeus Grant
Patrick HendrixZachaeus Grant of Claxton takes home the WTOC Player of the Week plaque after helping the Tigers beat Country Day 54-0 last Friday night.
He was all over the field on offense and defense and has the Tigers poised for the post-season. Grant carried the ball just 6 times for 250 yards and scored on four of those carries on runs of 71, 80, 14, and 76 yards. He later intercepted a pass and returned it 41 yards for a score to set up Thursday night's showdown with Calvary Day for one of the playoff berths from region 3-A.
Grant, who is just a sophomore, says he feels lucky to be able to do these kind of things, "Out here is was homecoming and I tried to put on a show all the fans who were coming home. So, I did what I could do."
Coach Patrick Hendrix added, "Friday night, he made two runs that were really, really special. He made a couple of cuts and a couple of spin moves. He the kind of kid that can really tote the ball for you."
At what point in the game did you feel like, this is kind of special for me? "The first time I touched the ball, the first time I broke," said Grant. "The first time I broke I knew I couldn't be stopped. I just kept running hard the whole game and nobody hit me."
"Zachaeus is one that will say, coach give me the football," said Hendrix. "He's the kind of kid that wants the football. In some of our bigger games it's come down, like coach, give me the ball, tell them to give me a hole and I'll make something happen."
What do you like more, offense or defense? "I like both of them," said Grant. "I probably like offense better because if I go to college I'll be an offensive guy and not defense because of my size and stuff. So, I guess I go offense."
The Tigers face Calvary Day Thursday night at 7:00 in the Pecan Grove and you can see highlights that night on The News at 11 and also on the WTOC End Zone Friday night at 11:30.
