Family Finance: Halloween on a budget

Spending money on everything from costumes to candy can make Halloween costs add up quickly, but you don't have to break the bank to have a good time.

Lori Engler with the Spirit Halloween Store in Savannah says you can find a costume for cheap if you know what to look for.

"One of the best is animal costumes, you can use items from your wardrobe such as a pair of leggings or a turtleneck shirt add ears and a tail. Add face make-up for a little nose and whiskers, and, instant animal costume."

Engler also suggests Halloween robes, which usually run for less than $20, and can easily be combined with a mask for a scary disguise.

Another tip, when browsing for costumes, don't skip the sale section.

"Don't forget clearance racks. Every once in a while a costume will be damaged or a piece missing and you can go to a clearance rack and get a costume."

As for decorations, a little goes a long way. Engler says bags of spider webs are very inexpensive, and can be put virtually anywhere.

So what about candy? Think outside of the box.

"Visit the dollar store. Believe it or not the dollar store carries a wide range of candy this time of year. You can go in the dollar store and pick up some name brand candy, mix it with some no-name candy, put it in their baggie it looks great."

If you still haven't purchased any costumes yet, Engler suggests doing so sooner rather than later. Sizes tend to run out in the final days before the holiday.
