Costumed crook takes off with high-grade handgun

Posted: Updated:

Crafty crooks disguised as contractors disabled the power at one Gwinnett County home and then ransacked the place. The thieves took off with a very powerful handgun that police do not want on the streets in the wrong hands.

It happened in a suburban neighborhood on Brittany Oak Trace in Snellville.

"The number one troubling thing is that the suspects obviously knew what they were doing," said Gwinnett County Police Detective Ryan Dunlap. "Anybody who dressed the part, hard hat and a reflective vest and targets a home, and then they disable the power source to avoid being captured by the surveillance video, then you're dealing with two suspects, or at least one who's leading the other - has been around the block a little bit."

Neighbor Sheila Burton worries she could have easily been fooled by the crook's disguise.

"You normally would answer the door when somebody comes like that," said Burton.

But the contractor getup is just the beginning - the crooks broke into the house and got away with two handguns, one of them is a .223-gauge pistol which is as powerful as a military assault rifle.

"It's kind of scary that something like that got into the hands of the wrong person," said Burton.

Investigators hope someone can recognize the suspects and get the handgun off the streets.

"When you've got .223 rifle-rated rounds coming out of any firearm, you're looking at something that can seriously hurt a lot of people," said Dunlap. "We're talking about a high capacity weapon."

Investigators need your help identifying the suspects, if you have information you're asked to call police.
