Businesses expect to cash in on Rock 'n' Roll Marathon

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The second annual Rock 'n' Roll Marathon is Saturday and thousands of people are expected to participate and attend. With that many people in the Hostess City, downtown businesses are eager to cash in.

Jennifer Salandi owns Ballastone Inn on Oglethorpe Ave. She says just about every room is booked for the marathon, and many hotels in the area have been booked for months.

"The phones are ringing off the hook. We accommodated everybody even as far out as Tybee Island. I know even Tybee is booked," said Salandi.

Hotels aren't the only businesses expecting to get a boost. Many restaurants are also expecting large crowds this weekend as runners start to arrive Thursday and stay through Sunday.

"It's like St. Patrick's Day for us in the restaurant business. These events are giving us a much-needed boost," said Jacob Sanford, manager of The Distillery.

The city started planning for this year's marathon shortly after last year's race. The city says the event is expected to bring in $32 million.
