Vacant home on Old Montgomery Road destroyed by fire

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Fire crews were out early Wednesday morning battling a house fire on Old Montgomery Road in Savannah.

Crews responded to a fully involved structure fire on Old Montgomery Road off of Montgomery Cross Road shortly before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, crews could see flames shooting up from the roof. Several fire units were called out to help battle the blaze due to limited hydrants in the area.

The home was destroyed by flames. Neighbors say the home has been abandoned for years. Firefighters have confirmed that no one was found inside of the home.

The fire was reported out by 6:30 a.m. Firefighters are now keeping an eye on hot spots to ensure the fire doesn't start back up. There are two homes nearby, but officials said they were never in danger.

Part of Old Montgomery Road near Hesse Elementary is back open. Police say that one of the two entrances to the school is open for students to be dropped off. Buses taking students to Hesse will run as usual.
