SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A tradition about as old as the military - the orderly transition from one commander to another, and Saturday morning the passing of the flag again at the 165th Airlift Wing of the Georgia National Guard.
There was a round of applause and welcome home for Colonel Keith Edenfield. The Colonel takes over command of the wing from Colonel Jesse Simmons, who's moving up in the ranks.
This change is special since Colonel Edenfield grew up here, watching the guard planes come and go.
"Well it's an exciting day here in savannah, having been a savannah native, growing up here in the city of Port Wentworth," said Colonel Edenfield.
"You know, as a kid this has always been a dream of mine to come out here initially, started flying and to take command of this wing is just an awesome experience for me. So, I'm looking forward to building our relationships with our community leaders, political leaders in the community and our employees as well because they play an important part of what we do here in Savannah."
Colonel Simmons heads for state guard headquarters in Atlanta.
