Health officials in Appling County said a 9-year-old girl has died from an unknown illness.

Appling County schools are closed Tuesday as a precautionary measure as health officials determine what kind of illness the little girl had, and what may have caused it, according to the school district.

According to health officials, preliminary tests don't indicate the girl had influenza or that her illness is contagious.

"School was closed today. Basically, we had sought the advice of our medical advisers that are dealing directly with the family involved. They're advice was it is safe to open school today. We did take that advice. At the time it was received, there was heightened concern in the community of Appling County and based on those heightened concerns, we decided to take a proactive approach to this issue by closing school," Appling Co. Superintendent Scarlett Copeland told WTOC.

Health officials expect to have final test results in the next couple of days.

The 2-year-old brother of the girl is in a hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., and sick with similar symptoms. He's in stable condition.

Six schools were affected by the closure. Classes are scheduled to resume on Wednesday.

The assistant for the Appling County Board of Education sent this email on Monday night:

November 5, 2012

As precautionary measure, we are cancelling school for all students and staff tomorrow, November 6, 2012. We have spoken with medical advisors and they have affirmed to school personnel that all students would be safe on campus. We want to assure all parents, student and concerned community members that we are taking a proactive approach.
