Newly elected Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap talks about her first duties she wants to accomplish in office.

Heap won the battle, beating out incumbent and her former employer Larry Chisolm for the seat that he held for four years.

Heap spoke with WTOC on the Wednesday morning in an exclusive interview. She landed 56 percent of the vote over Chisolm's 43 percent.

Heap said her first duty is to make sure the new major crimes unit is ready, which includes making sure all the prosecutors are prepared to handle those kinds of cases. That will go into effect Feb. 1.

She said she will assess the current district attorney's office to make sure that the younger attorneys are trained properly.

Heap also made clear is that she will work closely with programs that focus on keeping down juvenile crime.

Her overall focus is to make the community better.

"We kept going and reaching out into the community and that is what really gave me my strength. We tried to meet as many people as we could from different parts of this community. We want them to know that as D.A. - I am here - I don't care who you are. When you are a victim when you walk through that door, we look at your file. We don't care who you are we don't make our own. I think we just need to get back to what the job is," Heap said.
