Red Cross is looking for volunteers, donations

Posted: Updated:

A Nor'easter is the second storm in a one-two punch of severe weather that's socked New York, New Jersey and other nearby states.

The Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross is preparing to respond to Superstorm Sandy relief. An additional 80,000 blankets, food and relief supplies will be sent to the hardest hit areas.

But they're in need of more volunteers.

Red Cross volunteer training begins Friday. It is a hardship assignment. So volunteers will sleep in a shelter, work long hours and it will be cold.

At this point, the Red Cross has helped people in 10 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico affected by Sandy.

Volunteers who are working in the storm struck areas said the reality is 10 times worse.

Of the more than 5,000 shelter volunteers already deployed to the north, several are from the Savannah area American Red Cross. But now the massive response effort will get even bigger.

The executive director from the Savannah American Red Cross said it's important to remember that this mission is not a sprint - it's a marathon. Volunteers be continue to be sent there over the next several months.

The Red Cross is asking for donations to ship and buy items for the storm relief effort. To donate, go to the website for the Savannah Chapter of the American Red Cross.
