BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) -

A former Beaufort County Clerk of Court who pleaded guilty to embezzling money is asking the court to end her probation early.

In January 2006, Elizabeth Smith diverted $68,000 in federal child support money to pay the judicial salary of a family member working for the Beaufort County Drug Court.

As the Beaufort Co. Clerk of Court, Smith was in control of the money which ended up in a personal account in which she was a signatory.

She pleaded guilty April 2011 to conversion of public money and was sentenced to five years of probation. Her probation expires in Sept. 2015.

Solicitor Duffie Stone has filed a motion to object to her request. No hearing has been scheduled yet.
