EFFINGHAM CO., GA (WTOC) -

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office is warning the public of a prescription drug phone scheme.

According to police, someone calls the victims and informs them that they are under investigation for purchasing prescription pills online. The caller then goes on to say that in order to avoid criminal charges, they can wire money to a Pay Pal account. According to reports, the callers identify themselves as DEA agents or agents with the United States Department of Justice. Police believe it is a nationwide scheme.

Police are urging folks to hang up if they receive that phone call.
