Family of shooting victim says the violence has to stop

Marquis Mason Marquis Mason
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The family of Marquis Mason, 19, is speaking out against violence in the city of Savannah.

The teen is one of eight victims shot at the Coastal Empire Fair shooting on Nov. 3.

His father, Pastor Eric Mason, says the violence has to stop. Mason and several other pastors are coming together to put on a Stop the Violence rally.

After seeing more of the city's young people getting into trouble, the pastors hope this rally will encourage them that crime, guns and violence aren't the answer.

"We have to be concerned about our young people growing up in a safe neighborhood where they can walk the streets safely and not be afraid," says Pastor Alphonso McClendon.

McClendon hopes law enforcement and the community can work together to fight crime.

Meanwhile, Marquis Mason remains in stable condition. His family says a bullet hit several of his vital organs and is lodged in his chest.

The rally will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 at the First African Baptist Church, 23 Montgomery St., in downtown Savannah.

Savannah-Chatham Metro police are still looking for the person responsible for the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
