Volunteers landscape Spanish Moss Trail

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) -

The Greenery came out in full force Wednesday. More than 150 volunteers from all of their departments helped to landscape the new Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort. They donated their time and manpower, putting down sod, pine straw and irrigation as well as planting trees and shrubs along the first phase of this project, which stretches a mile long from Depot Rd. to Allison Rd.

"It's a great project to do for the community but it's also a great way for us to get our employees involved in the community instead of just writing a check for a charitable donation. This way, we get everyone in the company involved," said Lee Edwards, The Greenery.

"If we'd have to pay for the labor, we couldn't have afforded to do this. This is all being paid for privately, no government money in this piece of the project at all," said Dean Moss.

Organizers are hoping to extend the trail in the future to 13 miles from The Sands in Port Royal to the Whale Branch River. The grand opening of the first phase will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 20 at the end of Depot Rd. in Beaufort.
