HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) -

The girlfriend of a man who was fatally struck by a car Wednesday night has been arrested and charged in connection with his death.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies responded just after 11:15 p.m. Wednesday to the area near Dianah's Drive and Marshland Road. Jose Guadalupe Tinoco, 55, was lying in the road and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office.

Kelli Ann McKinney, 43, of Hilton Head Island, is charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. Sheriff's office investigators determined she had been driving a 1998 Mercury Mystique that fatally struck Tinoco.

Investigators found that McKinney's Mercury had damage consistent with evidence located at the crime scene, according to BCSO.

McKinney told investigators that she and Tinoco had been hanging out and drinking together at a home on Dianah's Drive beforehand. They left together and Tinoco was driving, but they got into an argument just after getting into the car. Tinoco got out and told her he was going to walk, but McKinney got behind the wheel and ran him over, according to the sheriff's office.

McKinney told investigators that she was unaware that she had hit Tinoco and left the scene.

The investigation continues. More additional charges may be pending as investigators attempt to determine if McKinney's actions were intentional.

To report crime, citizens can call Crimestoppers at 888.CRIME.SC (274-6372) or text the word TIPSC with a message to CRIMES (274637).
