Officials say a 1968 Cessna 172 may have gone down south of Savannah just before 7 pm Sunday evening.
Rescuers and first responders are concentrating their efforts along the ogeechee river near Richmond Hill.
Savannah Chatham Metro Police used their helicopter Eagle One to look for the plane over Middle Marsh Island. It sits between Georgetown and the Coffee Bluff area.
WTOC has confirmed that Coast Guard crews from Hunter Army Air Field, Tybee Island and Charleston are searching the waters for the plane.
An officer told WTOC someone near the Coffee Bluff Marina reported seeing a plane "dramatically losing altitude" about the same time it disappeared from radar.
We do know who the plane is registered to and where its from, but out of respect for the family we are waiting for folks with the FAA to confirm the information.
