SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -
City crews
responded Monday to a minor sewage spill at 2021 West Lake Ave.
A 6-inch PVC
Lift Station force main split, spilling an estimated 1,260 gallons of sewage
into a drainage ditch at the east dead end of West Lake Avenue, according to
the city.
The main was
reported and the area was cleaned. City Water and Sewer crews were notified about
the spill at 7:42 a.m. and it was stopped at 8:34 a.m.
The
ditch drains to a storm retention basin on the south side of Interstate
516. Notifications about the spill were posted around the storm retention
pond. The sewage in the drainage ditch was contained using sand bags and a
City jet-vac trucks removed sewage, according to the city. A
by-pass pump took the contaminated water out of the drainage ditch and put it
into the City Sanitary Sewer Collection system, according to the city.
The
spill is classified as a minor under Georgia Environmental Protection Division.
Bacteriological sampling was conducted to verify the extent of the spill and
all agencies were notified.
